After the victory of the War of Resistance Against Japan, Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai and other Communist Party leaders went to Chongqing on August 28th, 1945 to conduct peace negotiations with the Kuomintang government in order to avoid civil war and achieve domestic peace in accordance with the urgent aspirations of the people of the whole country for peaceful nation-building.

The Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence

The newly founded People’s Republic of China put into practice an independent foreign policy of peace and wanted to establish new diplomatic relations with the countries of the world on a new foundation. By October 1950, China had officially established diplomatic relations with 17 countries including the Soviet Union, Poland, Myanmar, and Indonesia, creating a favorable external environment for restoring its economic growth.
